WHAT IS F1 IN SCHOOLS TEST DRIVER?
Test Driver is an entry level version of F1 in Schools designed to be integrated into the school curriculum or undertaken by individuals who want to try F1 in Schools before committing to the full program.
F1 in Schools Test Driver challenges you to design a team identity for a Formula One team and design a car using computer aided design (CAD). The car must be designed using the Test Driver template and meet all of the regulations found in the Test Driver Regulation document. In addition, you must submit this completed portfolio to demonstrate your design process and understanding.
- Use the Test Driver Portfolio and car template files
- No cost to enter or participate
- Lower time commitment than the full F1 in Schools program
- Top entries will have their cars manufactured for free and will be invited to our finals event
- Overall winners will be invited to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
- Open from October 2023 - July 1st 2024
- Mapped to the Design & Technology curriculum
- Students participate on their own

STEP 3: PORTFOLIO - TEAM IDENTITY
Now it's time to get started working on the portfolio. On this page you will come up with a name for your Test Driver team and analyse logo from existing motorsport teams to help you design your own logo later.
On this page you will design your own logo through some initial sketching, deciding on colours and then creating your final digital logo. Use the evaluation box to explain your ideas and the meaning behind your design decisions.

STEP 5: CAR DESIGN
The following videos show the whole process for how we used the Test Driver Challenge Car template and Fusion 360 to model an example car design. Follow the steps carefully and create your own!

STEP 2: RESEARCH & INVESTIGATE
Understanding The Car
The image below shows the Test Driver car template. Every Test Driver car starts off like this using the downloadable files which are then imported into Fusion 360. Students then follow the video tutorials found on this page to modify the car body and design a front wing. Students must also read the regulations document to ensure they keep to the design rules for the car.
A completed Test Driver car will look similar to the car below.

STEP 4: PORTFOLIO - CAR RESEARCH & SPECIFICATION
It is important to conduct dome research before designing anything, especially a race car. On this page, through your own research, you will learn about some key technical principles which impact the performance of the car. You will also analyse a current or past F1 car to help inspire your designs later in the project.
On this page you will continue your research to understand materials and manufacturing. You will also be introduced to a 'Design Specification' and create your own to help understand the requirements for your car design.
-
STEP 6: PORTFOLIO - CAR DESIGN
Now its time to start designing your car! You can start with sketching your ideas or go straight onto 3D CAD such as Fusion 360 to begin designing your car. Use the boxes below to show your different design ideas. This could include different body shapes, wing designs, and car body graphics. The design ideas you include below can be based on the same car with small variations or if you have the time, completely different car designs.
This page is all about your final car design. You should include at least one screenshot of your final car (add more if you wish) and then evaluate it using the boxes around the edge of the page. Make sure the car here is the same car you will submit to us for manufacturing.
