SCHOOL EXTENSION UNIT - PREPARE FOR COMPETITION

The school extension units are for teams working at school and who are preparing for there school competition or the National Final. Children working on the #EtharaAtHome project aren't required to complete these units.

Want to know some of the best tips for becoming a Formula Ethara Winner?

Whether you are preparing for your School Competition or the National Final, in this unit you will find lots of useful tips to help get you on the winners podium. Work through the following topics to help get your team in pole position!

Who is this Unit for?

This work unit is most useful for students who will be entering the Formula Ethara competition as part of team. If you are planning on entering the special #EtharaAtHome category of the National Final, there is still a lot of useful hints and tips in this Unit for you too. Later on in this unit we will look at how preparing for the #EtharaAtHome category differs from entering the main competition.

Part 1 - What Makes a Winning Team?

The answer is in the question! The team, how well the team is organised and works together is key. The most successful teams practice great team work. All team members are working together, with agreed roles, following an agreed plan, and all aiming to achieve an agreed goal.

Team Work and the team working to a Project Plan is one of the best tips for becoming a Formula Ethara Winner.

In the following sections we will very briefly cover some of the basics of team work and project planning. You could do extra research to help find simple tools you could use to help with team work and keeping your project on the right track.

1. Team Work

The team, and how team members work together is super important in preparing for competition. Forming effective teams in sport and business is a huge topic that you could explore further, here is a short video with some of the basics for you to consider

 

2. Project Plan and Project Management

Preparing for a Formula Ethara Competition is a PROJECT. Successful Formula Ethara Teams develop a plan for their project and then follow and manage that plan to achieve their goals. Effective project planning and management is important in all types of business. Its super critical in Design and Engineering industries. Formula Ethara is a great opportunity to practice your project management skills

A plan for your Formula Ethara project can be very simple and it will help you a lot more than having no plan at all!

Video - How to Make Project Timeline

Engineering is everywhere! One of the most commonly used tools to help manage projects was invented by an Engineer, Mr Henry Gantt. A Gantt Chart is a timeline of project tasks. A simple Gantt chart lists tasks, when they start, task deadlines and how tasks are arranged in relation to each other across the whole project timeline.

Part 2 - Competition Categories & Project Elements

Competition Categories - What are they?

There are 3 different competition categories at the Formula Ethara National Final

  1. Rookie Category - school teams entered and where the school HASN'T previously participated in a National Final
  2. Professional Category - school teams and where the school HAS previously participated in a National Final
  3. #EtharaAtHome Category - for individual students or team that have completed the #EtharaAtHome program online

 

Part 3 - The Competition Rules

It sounds like common sense and basic advice, but......READ THE COMPETITION RULES! 

The best teams have read the rules and regulations so that know exactly what to do and what will be judged

The Formula Ethara National Final is held each year and run according to the Competition Regulations. "Regulations" is just another word for '"rules". The regulations document contains all detail and rules around what you need to prepare, what will be supplied for you, how judging happens, how racing works, point scoring and also.... copies of the Judging Scorecards

Part 3 - The Judging Scorecards

So - if you have made it done to Part 3, you have found the best tip for winning teams of them all....

FOLLOW THE JUDGING SCORECARDS!

Each project element has its own judging score card and points score system. All of the scorecards are included in the Competition Regulations document.

Each scorecard outlines exactly what content the competition judges will be looking for and how many points can be scored for the various pieces of content.

Download the Competition Regulations document. Find the Judging Scorecards and read over them carefully. Now go to the 'Prepare for Competition' section of the #EtharaAtHome Portfolio and create a checklist of what needs to be presented for each judging area / project element. If you haven't yet downloaded the Portfolio file, CLICK HERE to find it.

 

Part 4 - Presentation Skills

Learning how to be a great presenter is an extremely important 21st century skill. Presentation skills are an important part of the Formula Ethara Competition. At the Formula Ethara National Final, each team needs to make a 3 minute (time limit) presentation to a panel of judges.

Teams are judged on what they talk about, but also points are awarded for how well teams deliver their presentation.
