  1. About the Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge Push classroom boundaries and venture into new STEM learning terrains. The challenge requires students to work in teams of 3 – 6 members to DESIGN, BUILD, CODE & DRIVE a remotely controlled four-wheel drive vehicle around our special 4x4 in Schools Challenge terrain course. The program has an emphasis on innovating by combining mechanical and electrical engineering with coding elements to produce a custom vehicle that can successfully complete various terrain challenges The best teams from each school compete annually at the UAE Land Rover 4x4 in Schools National Final for a chance to represent the UAE at the World Finals Check out the highlights video from the 2017 World Finals held at Yas Marina Circuit:

There are two Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge categories in the UAE National Competition Development Category - This is a special category for teams who HAVE NOT participated in the UAE 4x4 in Schools competition previously. Professional Category - Open to all teams, but usually only teams from Schools who HAVE participated previously. Competition Categories and Cars Development Category 4x4 Car YOU MUST USE THE YAS IN SCHOOLS BASELINE CAR… This category has been specially developed for first time entering teams. In this category you are challenged to build the Yas in Schools baseline 4x4 in Schools Car and will be awarded bonus innovation points for developing improvements to the standard engineered parts, function and coding. Your development class car must include: Standard RC Rock Crawler chassis, drive train, wheels and suspension – no modifications allowed Customised Car Body Tilt Sensor with Alarm – modification of baseline solution permitted Automated Headlights – modification of baseline solution permitted Automated Tow Bar – modification of baseline solution permitted Professional Category 4x4 Car This is the ‘GO CRAZY’ category and is for teams who have previously competed in the UAE competition. Professional teams are permitted to use and modify any of the Yas in Schools Baseline 4x4 Car solutions. Importantly the car must comply to all the Technical Regulations included in this document. Professional Category 4x4 in Schools Cars must feature: Standard RC Rock Crawler - all suspension, drive train and chassis modifications are allowed Customised Car Body – made from any material Automated Tow Bar Solution – must be able to complete the 4x4 Tow challenge Tilt Sensor & Automated Headlights Car MUST include at least one telemetry feature eg. Real time tilt data. Car Body Options Teams in both categories must manufacture a custom car body / shell for their 4x4 in Schools vehicle that complies with the relevant technical regulations. Method to manufacture and materials are free choice. Teams are awarded points for quality of manufacture, detail of manufacturing process, appearance and function. Examples include: 3D printed shells Vacuum formed from hand made or CNC machined mould Heavy weight paper card net Assembly of laser cut components Automated Tow Bar Teams will be required to reverse their 4x4 in Schools vehicle from a start line to the parked standard Yas in Schools trailer. The trailer must then be coupled to the 4x4 in Schools car without any physical human interaction. The 4x4 in Schools vehicle must then tow the trailer back to the starting line. This is a timed test. Timer starts when you first cross the start line and timer stops when you pass back over the line with trailer in tow. 4x4 Tow Challenge All teams will need to complete the 4x4 Tow Challenge which involves towing the standard Yas in Schools trailer around a special course. The tow challenge will include some reversing tests.
  3. To participate in the UAE Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge, each team needs to purchase the official Team Starter Pack from Yas in Schools. The Starter Pack includes: Official 4x4 in Schools RC Rock Crawler Set Plug n Play Electronics Pack inclusive of Arduino / Uno R3 Controller Bluetooth Module Breadboard Expansion Module Gyroscope Passive Buzzer Wiring jumper leads Light Dependent Resistor LEDS / Resistors and much more

  5. The Yas in Schools Baseline 4x4 Vehicle is an open source 4x4 in Schools solution that allows teams to get started quickly and achieve a successful outcome. The Baseline 4x4 Vehicle solution provides teams with multiple opportunities to improve designs and innovate from the Baselibe Vehicle Platform. Developed around the official UAE team Starter Pack, Yas in Schools has developed a complete ‘baseline’ Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Car. All 3D parts, electronics schematics and code are freely available to teams through the downloads section of this website. R&D of the Baseline 4x4 Car with huge thanks to Yas in Schools Alumni; Saish Gaonkar, Abdulla Khan and Aman Pret Singh. YOUR CHALLENGE IS TO INNOVATE & IMPROVE!     Download and unzip to access all trailer parts ready for 3D printing. To complete your trailer you will need to find 4 x Lego Technic or Mind Storm wheel type - Lego Part Number 56145 (30.4mm dia x 20mm). The Yas in Schools official trailer axle has been designed for direct fitting of these wheels. See below picture.

    This is the recommended app to use from your mobile device to control the Towbar Servo on the Yas in Schools Baseline 4x4 Car via Bluetooth. Compatible with Android devices only. Installation Instructions: Download the .Zip file to your device. Unzip the zip file (if required) Navigate to your phone settings menu then to the security settings. Enable the Install from Unknown Sources option. Use a file browser and navigate to your download / unzipped folder. Tap the APK to begin the installation process. The app should safely install.

    Zip file contains; short, medium and long versions in STL format, along with the Fusion 360 model The suspension clip is designed to be placed above the coil spring on the official 4x4 rock crawler damper. It compresses the coil spring which then tightens the suspension and can help improve performance when extra weight of body shell and electronics is added to the car.
